Smart buy for a Smarter repair - 452 head swap and prepgression
Fantastic head and the fact that it is installed and given the Smart Car that had suffered catastrophic failure - new lease of life. Properly maintained cars give years of service and these heads while maintained have longevity, however, the service window is relatively narrow. Just a few hundred miles past the service interval and damage will of our in my opinion. Mercedes are aware of this and that is why the service more most cars is 10,000 miles the Smart is just 7000. The head that I’m reviewing was removed from a 452 roadster which had feature modifications such as oil cooling which has given the head cooling running and keeping the temperature inside oils max temperature before breakdown. The valve train and guides were in excellent shape as were the cam lobes, followers and journals. It’s important to get the right product for your rebuild and a donor 452 head is guaranteed to be in a much healthy position than a head from a 450 which will probably suffer the same failure points. The head was true and flat and didn’t require machining or skimming at all. Testament to Mercedes recognising weak and performance related issues and rectifying them during progressive updates and tweaks to the engine development. Once cleaned and serviced this particular head is now installed and the engine has not only a new lease of life but many more tens of thousands of mothering life ahead.
