As a counterpoint to the heroic horde of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, the ageing gunmen of Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece break the very laws of honour which bind them in this bloody and meditative tale of the American West widely considered to be the self-conscious nail in the coffin of the genre. William Holden, Robert Ryan, and Ernest Borgnine star as the leaders of a grizzled crew of Texan bandits who ride to Mexico, where, one by one, they are unceremoniously slaughtered by a Mexican revolutionary. The western, a genre steeped in legend and the concept of loyalty, was a dying breed when Sam Peckinpah unleashed this amoral and violent opus. Along with BONNIE AND CLYDE, it ushered in a new breed of Hollywood film, depicting a harsh reality where lines between right and wrong became blurred. Peckinpah brilliantly used ageing Western stars such as Ryan and Holden to convey this passing of the cinematic torch. The film brought issues of violence and morality in movies to the forefront of American film criticism. Instead of appreciating the film as a critique of brutal violence, many critics responded by rejecting what they saw as a superfluous spectacle of dead bodies.

    Very good

    Very decent quality DVD version of this unmatched revisionist western classic. There's no point in reviewing the actual film here (near-universal critical consensus should suffice), but I had no complaint with the price, delivery time and quality of the picture and sound quality. I had previously bought another (even cheaper) DVD of this film from Music Magpie and it was inadequate in every respect. This DVD instead is the authentic article with bonus discs featuring a 'Making of The Wild Bunch ' documentary and commentaries etc. There are more recent, digitally polished versions available for the assiduous movie connoisseur, but for an afternoon matinee with my 98-year-old Grandpa it couldn't be faulted.

    two wild bunches

    those two wild bunches makes it sometimes hard to understand in their seperate ways of argueing and different manners of behaviours in a movie full of shoot first and then ask. perfect balanced echoeing of the used weapens. according to the very quick act changes in this movie.nice to see that the same mexican general in this movie was blown away and in an other peckinpah screening script still was alive in another role.Pat Garret en Billy the Kid. fun for the kids and it is alomost christmas time. pack m in pah.
