Felicity Lott and Laurent Pelly formed a successful partnership for Offenbachs' "La Belle Helene" in Paris a few seasons ago, and now they have tackled another Offenbach - "La Grande Duchesse"; the original satirical targets of which are now somewhat lost in the mists of time. The operetta has its' longeurs, but Pelly keeps everything moving and Lott holds centre stage. As in his productions of "Orphee aux Enfers" and the "Helene" the Pelly signatures are clearly visable -plenty of dancing, eccentric costuming and make up (heavily indebted to Jean Paul Gaultier), and a smattering of cross dressing. The truth is either you like his style or you don't! I happen to believe that generally the singing overall is not as strong as it could be, and that there are some odd mis judgements of what is funny (possibly Gallic wit?) but overall they are terrific fun and as far as is possible offer Offenbach for the 21st Century. The casts seem to be having fun without overdoing it and the spectacle runs like a well oiled machine. I have purchased all of them on DVD and they provide me with a great deal of pleasure especially since in the UK Offenbach is usually murdered. So- I personally recommend this DVD; but be warned - one mans idea of a stylish witty production may well turn out to be your idea of over choreographed and designed hell!Read full review
