Giovanni Ribisi plays Elliott, the enigmatic engineer who persuades the survivors they can scavenge enough from the crashed plane to build another to fly them to safety while, unlike in the original, a love interest is provided by Miranda Otto as the tough yet vulnerable Kelly. Superbly photographed by Brendan Galvin, this stands against the original, with the mix of characters providing the drama and the take-off of the cobbled-together aircraft a nail-biting climax.
