I must be one of very few few people who didn't really like this movie if the boards on IMDB are to be believed. There is no doubting it was a very self-assured, competent, and technically very good movie. With Wes Craven behind the loudhailer it had every right to be. But what it did for me in technical terms was undermined by its total lack of cinematic sensibility. It was no more than a glossy made-for-TV, movie of the week. In essence it had no real menace! And unfortunate as it may sound, and despite having a horror maestro at the helm, RED EYE was an inadvisable departure from a genre that has kept Mr Craven very well in beans. I'm sure it's not that he can't direct or write beyond the parameters of the sick and the macabre, it's just his work seems muted, and artificially strained because of it when he does. to be fair he's better off leaving such fair to the less auspicious of his proteges, and getting back to what he knows, loves, and does best - horror. When it comes down to the scare factor of tradition, of the terrifying and the twisted, he really is one amongst few.Read full review
"It wasn't like it was my lifelong dream to become a horror director," says Wes Craven, explaining his slight change of direction. "It just happened." The Scream director comes off as likeable and self-effacing in the so-so commentary and featurettes, even if the title of one - A New Kind Of Thriller - is the inverse of reality. Red Eye is an old, old kind of thriller - a Hitchcock knock-off with shonky '70s stylings: a similar feel to Black Sunday or Juggernaut. And there's nothing wrong with that. Mean Girls' rising star Rachel McAdams makes an excellent Woman In Peril, her character vulnerable yet resourceful when charming flight partner Cillian Murphy turns nasty - forcing her to make a call that will save her father's life but end someone else's... Murphy relishes playing Ruthless Bastard and the pair's charisma make their sit-down confrontations far more gripping than the panto finale. Overall: simple, enjoyable and - rare and important, this - short.Read full review
The reason for my purchase of 'red eye' is because i watched it a few years ago at the cinema and loved, then i was in one evening and really fancied watching a good film and i thought about 'red eye' again so i decided to buy it on e-bay as dvd's are usually a great buy. The main reason i like it is because it is an intense film that makes you question what will happen next and keeps you engaged in the film which i think is important.
After a disappointing 'Cursed', Wes Craven is back on top form with Red Eye. Easy to follow thriller, you will be glued to your television. Outstanding performances by Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy. This certainly has to be one of the better thrillers that I have seen in a long time. Well worth watching if you are a fan of thrillers.
