About this product

Product Information

In her last film, Tallulah Bankhead portrays fanatically religious Mrs. Trefoile, a psychotic woman who, with the help of her gardener (Donald Sutherland), imprisons her dead son's fiancee (Stephanie Powers) in a tiny room in her home so that the girl's soul will be properly cleansed in order to be reunited with her dead husband in heaven. Legendary British studio Hammer produced a script by Richard Matheson, based on the novel by Anne Blaisdell. Considered to be a camp classic in many circles, the film is also regarded as one of Hammer's best moments.

Stefanie Powers with a bizarre English accent falls prey to her dead fiance's , religiously obsessed mother. Initially the film is played for laughs , Stefanie being her 'Hart to Hart' cookie devil may care self. But Tallulah Bankhead , the mother, resists this direction right from the start. At first just jarring with the light overtones but then dominating the direction and cast to create a much more menacing reality. She is assisted by her maid and hench woman Yootha Joyce of all people . Very physical and remarkably candid on many occasions with Stefanie being bullied, battered, dragged , starved and threatened with facial disfigurement. Another odd appearance is a young almost albino Donald Sutherland who plays a simpleton that Stefanie tries to befriend. You'll recognise the locations as typically New Forest Hammer House Style, used in many TV series of the 60's . There's also a good line is suspense as twice or more Stefani's new fiance is just moments from discoving the truth about her disappearance. A good cast , some great performances . Well worth the watch if you want to see some familiar stars in unfamiliar rolls.
