This film is a like a big cuddle. In the style of Ghibli it doesn't feel like you are being shoehorned into feeling any particular thing, but feel, if you have a heart, you will. It is cute, but not cutesy. It's not quite like any other film I've seen. Miyazaki's animism schtick is in full force here, and as always a seductive concept it is. The plot is slight, but I see this a strength in this purring cat of a film. It seem to me the themes of the film are loving relationships - it evokes the feelings of love you have for family and for the love of pets (Tortoro is his own thing but he is lke a uber pet). It could be seen as a children's film - but like any good children's work it goes well beyond that. Any age of person with sensitivity can fully enjoy the film, and I think some perspectives of it would be lost on children.Read full review
