A really good representation of VAN’s work.

When I heard a track from Pay the Devil on Kershaw's Radio 3 programme my heart skipped a beat. Van Morrison...country music...marriage in heaven... It occurred to me that Elvis (Costello not Presley) had attempted the same thing with Almost Blue. Almost Blue was his 7th recording while Van's effort clocks in at 37. That says a lot about how you should approach this landmark in recording history. Take a look at that cover. It's fully loaded. If you want to sit at the table with the Man, you better be holding a good hand. Van certainly is; There Stands the Glass, Your Cheatin' Heart, Till I Gain Control Again. But sitting comfortably beside these classics stands Playhouse, Pay the Devil and the cd's standout track This Has Got To Stop all written by himself. There's the rub - only a musician with 4 decades of quality behind him could pull off such a feat. It's a tribute to Van Morrison that when you put this cd on, you treat each track equally. This is not an album of covers, this is the real deal. Mr Morrison's devil has been long caged but on Pay the Devil he comes out roaring. Listen to the lion. Don't let your deal go down. Better the devil you know.Read full review
You know, as a rock performer for many years, I always hated Country music. Since Van the Man`s "Pay the Devil", I have grown to really like some of it!There Stands the Glass, Playhouse, the Title track, The wonderful"Until I Gain Control Again" have changed my life so much. I am even playing these and many other tracks with my Band,"Mystic" Maybe a Van the Man Tribute Band???
The Wee man from Belfast up to his usual high standard. No two albums are alike, he chops and changes his style, one moment jazz/blues the next country. Unlike other artists or bands you cannot predict what his next album will be like except that it will be good. He uses only the finest musicians in his band from whatever genre takes his fancy. Never boring, even after over 50 years performing on stage, he has not lost his appetite for the love of his life, music.
