  • Excellent replacement freewheel for Trek 7100 (quick tips in review!)

I decided to replace the very worn freewheel on my Trek 7100. A quick bit of online research led me to this part, which is a like-for-like replacement of the original made by the same manufacturer. It arrived in under a week, was well packaged, of excellent quality and works brilliantly (in combination with a new chain). I've got that pleasant "purring" sound back again. Price was very reasonable too compared to the bike shop I asked for a quote. Quick tips for anyone attempting this themselves: you will need a Shimano freewheel tool (about £5), a chain whip to stop the freewheel rotating (again, £5) and a heavy duty adjustable wrench. I bought a 12" pro wrench with a comfortable rubber handle from Toolstation for £15. The freewheel tool requires a 1" spanner (25.4mm), hence the need for an adjustable wrench. Wear gloves because it's easy to slip and skin your knuckles on the cassette/spokes! An easy job but you might need to apply a lot of force to loosen off the old freewheel as they get tighter over time as a result of pedalling. Great purchase, would recommend.

  • Hill climbing made easy.

I bought this seven speed freewheel cassette because of the super low 34 tooth climbing gear to add versatility to my ancient mountain bike. Once it was set up and indexed it made hill climbing a lot easier, at times on the hills I had to get off when I was out of gears but not now, it has saved me money and definitely saved my legs!!!
