These pliers are made from two pieces of cast metal, hinged at one end and kept apart with a steel spring. The stotz/stylz/styx are held in the jaws of the applicator and squeezed on to the line by pressing the lever. To remove stotz you put them in the groove near the front of the jaws and line up the split in the shot with the blade opposite to the groove. A squeeze of the lever will pry apart the stotz. They work much better than the cheaper shot pliers made from stamped out bits of yellow plated steel. Also much better than biting the shot on with your teeth. The only reason I gave four stars rather than five is because the little blade which opens the stotz was not sharp enough. 30 seconds work with a nail file soon fixed it.
