  • Some good writing & acting, but softer & anticlimactic following the opening Borg episode.

Season 4 starts with a huge bang. Picard is a Borg, and Riker has to take bold action to save Earth. Subsequently, however, there is less action & less innovative SciFi than in previous seasons, and Riker becomes a secondary character. The hardcore political correctness message of Season 1 has also softened, with Season 4 showing a lot of family-centred episodes. The best of these is Picard's return to his home farm in France. Also strong is the double-episode finale, split with Season 5, in which Worf must leave StarFleet to join his brother in a Klingon civil war. Troi, LaForge, Beverly, & Data all get to star in their own episode. Q, Vach, Lwaxana Troi, and Yar (or her daughter) also make a return. However, with Riker taking a back seat, probably the strongest feature of this Season is Picard doing a little more wooing & fighting. No longer the philosophical admiral-in-waiting, Picard shows considerable grit, tempered by mature judgement. However, the intensity of the opening Borg episode means that the rest of the season is a little anticlimactic.
