C.S. Lewis' timeless adventure The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe follows the exploits of the four Pevensie siblings - Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter. Set in World War II England the children enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of 'hide-and-seek' in the rural country home of an elderly professor. Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Under the guidance of a noble and mystical ruler, the lion Aslan, the children fight to overcome the White Witch's powerful hold over Narnia in a spectacular, climactic battle that will free Narnia from Jadis' icy spell forever.
Eh. That's about sums it up. The first half of the movie I really really enjoyed. I felt they captured the mood of the children, the professor's house, and the magic of entering Narnia for the first few times beautifully. The second half, however, felt like a cheap Lord Of The Rings ripoff. Like someone saw LoTR, but felt it was too violent and grown-up, so they took sanitized it and re-wrote it a bit to make it more suitable for kids. It almost had me bored in places. I read all the Narnia books as a little kid, and LOVED them. After I first read The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, I went through our whole house, testing every wardrobe to see if there happened to be a magic land behind it. I even remember doing it at my aunt's house (I think I was around...9 or so?). All of it seemed so magical and beautiful and interesting to me, and the first half of the movie really did the books justice as I remember them. I just wish the second half wouldn't have felt so cheap after being used to the magnificence of Lord Of The Rings. Also - the two girl characters annoyed me a little. I know I read this in a review when it was just in cinemas, but I so agree with it: I am part of the Buffy-generation, and I expect the girl characters to be just as much kick-ass as the boys. I really did not like how the girls sat around and watched and cried while the main good guy was being tied up and under threat of death. They didn't even try to rescue him or anything - they just sat there and cried! And the older girl had a bow and arrow, for god's sakes! I realize Buffy (and similar shows/movies with strong female characters) probably spoiled me, and that things were way different in C. S. Lewis's time....but I wish they'd been a little bit more proactive instead of sit and cry. Pft!Read full review
