What do you buy the man who has everything? This is the premise of the movie 'The Game' directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Douglas as the multi millionaire investment banker Nicholas Van Orton. Mr Van Orton has everyhting; a mansion 'the biggest one on the block', luxury cars, a shower in his office, everything, i think he says $600 million so you get the point. But for all his riches life seems strangely empty, no loved ones just estranged former lovers, no friends just business associates (this is kind of how lonely and unhappy i hope all rich people are to make myself feel better for being skint). His life of solitude well depicted as his 49th birthday approaches. It is at this point that his tearaway younger brother Conran (played by Sean Penn) arrives on the scene to deliver his personal birthday gift to Nicholas - a gift voucher from CRS (Consumer Recreation Services) a shadowy and elite outfit that provides 'life experiences' for the uber rich - those who are so surrounded by the trappings of wealth that they would'nt even know what is lacking in their lives until CRS provide it. Without wishing to spoil the movie this is where things really begin to take off with the seemingly innocent birthday gift morphing into an all-consuming, life-altering rollercoaster ride that threatens to take everyhting that Nicholas has worked so hard to build. I must admit a slight bias in this review; i am a big fan of the works of David Fincher, for me his clinical, precise direction coupled with clean almost cold visual style is perfectly suited to the sanitised marble walls and oak panelled clubs that populate the world of Nicholas van Orton. However it is when Nicholas is removed from these comfortable surroundings as his plight worsens that that perfomance from Michael Douglas really takes off, the character arc (as they refer to it in Hollywood) is perfectly plotted and delivered by Douglas as his behaviour evolves to keep pace with the changes in his environment, and it was this character development i concentrated on when watching this special DVD. The DVD itself is nothing special - i own the original release and the film itself presented on the new disc does not appear to have been additionaly digitally remastered. There is no DTS audio stream and the only movie related bonus is an audio commentary with David Fincher. The alternative ending does not really qualify as being alternative more 'shortened' and the rest of the exras are paltry - but see the film for the film itself, then to round-off the Fincher milestones watch Se7en, then watch Fight club, but don't talk to anyone about it. Final thoughts - wait for the high definition release.Read full review
This is the sort of film that makes you realise your life can be as exciting as you want to make it, after watching this I am glad my life is boring!! Good film Michael Douglas in one of his better films. Nothing to dislike, I loved it.
Informative commentary from Fincher. And the special features are worth price of disc alone. Highly recommended for any fan of the film! Peace out.
Clever, action packed suspense movie with great performances from Michael Douglas and cast. Full of thrills and twists, highly recommended viewing.
I was recommended to see this movie from a spiritual course I have been participating in . Although this movie The Game has a strange concept with a dark feel to the story I can see some spiritual guidance in this movie. If you like story lines a little bit off the norm , this movie could be for you. I would give the movie 7 out of 10.
