This epic all be it very long feature film is one of the first fo pioneer the feature film genre. After being amazed at the leaders of the cinema industry of the Pre classical era; Griffith decided to take his turn at attempting a epic, cinematic piece of his own. after the immensly successful Birth of a Nation (1915) which obtained both Glory and scorn for its sensative subject matter of story being an adaptation of 'The Klansman' Griffith was set on righting himself in the American public's eyes as master of Cinema. taking all the ideas and discoveries he could from the leading cinematic producers of Europe and Britian, and thus created INTOLERANCE. One of the first cinematic works to encapsulate film language as a whole. Griffith is not the father of modern cinema as much as many scholars would like to simplfy; but he is responsible for plucking all the good ideas in film language and completing them in one work. this film is long; and in itself to the untrained eye intollerable in itself! but to the budding scholar; a wonderful Multi stranded narrative achievement. worth watching just to educate yourself. It is one of the more important film works of the 20th century. By the time of The Italian epics Quo Vadis (1912) Last days of Pompeii (1913) Cabiria (1914) many common rules and tools at the film makers disposal give birth to highly budgeted and advanced examples of dynamic narrative structures. Griffith took inspiration from these Italian epics. For example – by the time of Cabiria (1914) directed by Giovanni Pastrone the promises of film as a profitable entertainment medium had already begun to establish themselves as had much of the narrative form and language. Cabrira was 123 minutes long. Italy by that time, (1914) had come to be the world's third largest exporter of movies. Considerably ahead of the US market, Europe, developed feature films on a more regular basis. And naturally much of the gradual refinement of the film language happened during this period. Griffith simply confirmed what was already becoming the norm. Griffith had found Cabiria and the work of the Europeans inspiring. He began to work harder to develop longer and more intricate narrative is in his own productions. Birth of a Nation is widely recognized as the Americans first epic feature film. Polished editing and camera techniques had not been seen at this level before by its American audience. Although the Europeans had already conquered the first attempt at epics. Many of the rules of Narrative and camera had already long been established but Later Griffith would release in protest of accusations of racism, his epic multi stranded narrative masterpiece Intolerance. More of these pioneering European film discoveries not only showed their face during Birth of a Nation (1915), but also the multi narrative Landmark of intolerance (1916) and the taboo, story of forbidden love Broken Blossoms (1919) Griffith had unified what he felt were the defining principles of film language from the early inklings of what had been filtered through the hands of those early experimental pioneers.
