Just as I remember it...scary

By today's hi tech, glossy standards, the production values of this 1976 television series may seem a little shoddy and cheap to some, but Nigel Kneale's panache for fusing together elements of horror with the ordinary and the mundane more than makes up for a few wobbly sets and grainy pictures. It's what we don't see - what is hidden behind the camera or is suggested - that makes these six stories so terrifying and satisying. A married middle-aged couple in a large country house are besieged by hoards of rats with not a single rat-whisker in sight, a spotty sexually frustrated teenager working in the oppressive environment of a small supermarket unleashes a terrifying, telekinetic force, and a pregnant woman is haunted by an unrecognisable dead creature discovered sealed inside a large jar and bricked up behind a wall. The stories are chilling and well-plotted. 'Baby' and 'Special Offer' being two of the most frightening things I have ever seen on television.Read full review
This was a television series from my childhood. However, it is not a childrens series! It scared the living daylights out of me when I first saw it at the tender age of 8 and one particular episode called Baby stuck with me for a very long time - the ending back then was horrific! Watching it again was a joy! It still creep-ed me out but obviously not as much now I'm 43. However, leaving aside the 70's feel and a bit of ropey acting, the stories (written by Quatermass's Nigel Keale)are brilliant and unique. How do you get a dolphin to be scary??? Highly recommended especially if you like scaring your kids - they'll laugh at the special effects but that will be hiding the fear!
All good.
