MARCHING THROUGH THE YEARS Band of the Grenadier Guards Another re-issue on CD of a long departed vinyl recording (1987). This is one for the lovers of the military march and features a number of “standards” as well as a few lesser heard items and two from the cinema (Raiders of the Lost Ark and A Bridge Too Far). The playing is excellent throughout and would form a useful addition to anyone’s collection. The accompanying sleeve notes are adapted from the original but in an effort to fit them on to the page the review of the items starts at number 14. I would suggest that it would have been better to have included all the marches and to have edited the band and Director of Music history. If you enjoy marches - Buy it - you’ll enjoy it - I did!!
The striking photograph on the cover and the much-advertised 2006 boded well. However, a large proportion of the contents are derived from yet another compilation released by EMI in 1989 and, presumably, they appeared in full before even that. Essentially, of course, the contents are well played by one of the country's foremost military bands and those contents range widely from splendid nineteenth century traditional German marches, through American circus marches of a similar vintage to theme music from blockbuster films of recent years. One slightly different offering is the theme entitled "Piper in the Meadow", used some years ago for the BBC's "Mr Smith's Country Garden" (?), featuring the late horticulturalist, Geoffrey Smith. Another irritation is that the liner notes are incomplete, giving some details only of the last five tracks, out of eighteen. A request to Delta Music, the current publishers, for the missing elements has remained unacknowledged after several weeks.Read full review
this cd was bought for my wifes brother in south africa where this type of music is very hard to find and he has had many hours of pleasure listening to it
Great for a 2yr old obsessed with marching bands (well we do live near Windsor, so he sees them quite a bit!). Good quality recording and a great mix of marches, including lots of traditional ones.
