Probably more inventive and entertaining than Dad's Army, with equally engaging characters. Some of the pieces in the complete series rank in the highest ranks of farce, eg. the parade by a visiting RSM conducted on their knees after the RSM has been hypnotised to imagine Lofty is 6'8" and the Section would do credit to the Elite Guards at Buckingham Palace.
Perry and Croft created a singularly fine series which mercilessly pokes fun at the British in India in the closing days of the Raj. How they produced one unique episode after another I do not know. They were themselves one-off.
Michael Bates [who learnt to speak Hindi before he learnt English in India and was fluent in Urdu] is magnificent, Windsor Davies is brilliant and Don Estelle brings a touch of class to the proceedings. This is not to detract from the performance of the rest of the cast who contribute to the funniest series ever.
Great old comedy;hard to find these days as the BBC will not show it again as they think it is not politically correct.I recommend this to anyone who wants a good laugh.
