I bought this after going through a Robert Downey Jr period and watching alot of his films. I read alot about the movie, and mostly it had negative reviews. However, I thought the premise and imagery sounded interesting so I bought it, although wary and not with high hopes. I'd understood that the film was about the uncertainty of dreaming, and turning the worlds of reality and dreams topsy-turvy by blurring the margins. The leading lady (Annette Benning: I didn't recognise her either, so I looked her up; the trashy redhead from Mars Attacks!) is diagnosed as insane when she is convinced a man in her dreams (Robert Downey Jr) is abducting and murdering children; one of those her deceased daughter. She comes to realise her dreams are insight into reality and uses them to find the real psychopath. Unfortunately the film didn't deliver, though I agree with some of the reviews I've read that said the idea was good and that there could have been a decent film here (I can't find the original review, but I did read that somewhere!). In my opinion I feel the film just got too complicated and messy; if the plot had been whittled of all its attempts at 'clever' details it might have done better. There were a few touches I liked but they could have been better and maybe executed with a touch more sophistication; such as the recurring apple imagery. From what I can remember there were a few cheesy moments, but given its time it's maybe not to be judged on that. The acting wasn't to my taste; too overdone. Though there are some good moments too. RDJ is decent but not up to his current standard, and for the role he plays he doesn't make an appearance till the last 3rd of the movie or so. The other main characters I can't remember much of though they played fairly integral roles; I guess they just didn't stick in my mind. To be fair I was a little, shall we say intoxicated at the time. Although saying this, the movie, whilst probably fair to categorise as 'bad' - certainly no classic - is not all that bad to watch. There are some entertaining moments, but I suppose only if you appreciate it with tongue-in-cheek. What kept me going were the little aesthetic touches, but that could just be me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but if you've the chance to see it, why not. Don't expect 'Shawshank' - just take it as a slightly cheesy horror and you might not hate it. I think with this type of film it's important to not take it too seriously, so if you like a gritty, realistic film this is maybe not for you. If you're interested in just expanding your horizons and taking the bad with the good then go for it. It might make you appreciate really great films more! Oh, and just to see RDJ's terrible hair dye right at the end. It's a treat! LHRead full review
when Robert Downey Jr. actually featured in the film, it was pretty good, he is an awesome actor! but most, if not all of the film, from the beginning up until that part was fairly crap and un-entertaining! :(
