  • Decent small scope mount with flimsy motor mounts.

This mount is stable enough for a 60-80mm refractor, and has full worm gears on both axes. However, the motors are attached with flimsy plastic parts - the worst engineering I've ever seen on a Meade product! I replaced them with metal brackets from the local hardware store. The motors are speed-regulated DC and require a hand paddle to operate. The particular mount that I purchased needed to have the worm brackets adjusted for smooth operation with minimum backlash, which is easily done. I don't know the Meade model number for this mount - it dates from the early 2000's. The tube mounting rings are probably for a 114mm reflector, but I doubt this mount is really beefy enough for that large a scope, except at low magnification.

  • Nice scope

Low power scope that's good for star clusters, double stars, etc. bright objects like the moon have green color, due to the lens coating.

  • Make sure there is no damaged parts before you purchase

The telescope is ok, but I did add some upgrades such as a motorized focus and the Meade Autostar Controller. That added about $150 USD to the price of this used telescope. The person I bought it from did not mention that the viewfinder mount was damaged and this damage made the viewfinder useless. I am still trying to work on a fix for the mount. I added some Meade Super Plossl eyepieces such as the 6.4 mm and a 17 mm. The view of the moon was breathtaking!! I would recommend using the Meade telescope stand for this telescope. I made an adaptor plate for the bottom of my telescope to fit a camera tripod. It is ok for now, but I am going to upgrade to the actual recommended tripod by Meade in the near future. Overall, it is a good telescope. I am not a big fan of all the plastic parts that they use in it's construction. I would have preferred aluminium pieces manufactured by the lost wax method or a mould. I think that for the money a new one costs, the mirror that flips up for the eyepiece or down for camera use should be glass and not a piece of plastic with a mirror coating. I would recommend someone starting in astronomy try out the smaller 60mm or 70mm telescopes first as they are about 1/3 the cost when bought used than a 90 mm Mak. I give this telescope a 4 star rating, but there is still room for improvements.
