Donkey Kong is one of the most popular and revered video game franchises ever, with dozens of different games available. One of the rarest versions of this game is the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) console. It is a special timed edition of the game originally designed for competitions. The box from Nintendo indicates that only 2,500 copies of Donkey Kong Country Competition were made. Because there were only a limited number of these games released when they came out in 1994, it is sought after by collectors and video game enthusiasts alike.This Nintendo video cartridge is a shortened version of the larger Donkey Kong Country. Donkey Kong itself is a spin-off from the famed Mario Bros. franchise. Both have earned their place in gaming history. The object of Donkey Kong Country Competition is to collect as many points as possible within a five-minute window. After the time is up, play freezes and must be manually reset before players can try again.This SNES special cartridge made its debut in a 1994 competition known as Powerfest ’94. It was also part of the Blockbuster world video game contest in 1995. The back insert of the box indicates a high score set by a SNES professional of 3,641, though gamers have posted higher scores in online reviews.This special edition offers SNES gamers the challenge of navigating eight levels. As in the original, the game begins in the Jungle Hijinks level as Kong rolls out of his tree house. Subsequent levels include Reptile Rumble, Ropey Rampage, Coral Capers, Winky’s Walkway, Bouncy Bananza, Orang-Utan Gang, Sow Barrel Blast, Slipside Ridge, Ice Age Alley, and Croctupus Chase. Some levels from the original have been disabled, presumably to speed play.With the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge, Super Nintendo gamers can earn points in a variety of ways as Donkey Kong makes his run through the country. The largest point values are for collecting the letters for KONG, and players also earn 250 points for each level of the game completed. Large numbers of points are also available for collecting bunches of bananas. However, you need to be careful as you go through the game because you will meet adversaries along the way. Hazardous creatures encountered along the way include Gnawties, Kritters, Klumps, and a single Necky. Make sure to jump to avoid your adversaries, or you will be sent back to the start to begin again. Every second is valuable as the time clock never stops ticking. Reach the end and players will find themselves on a pirate ship called Gangplank Galleon for a final showdown. Gamers are given an initial starting set of 50 lives, in contrast to the five in the full version. Another difference between the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong Country competition version and the full game is that designers have programmed in the addition of a point counter, which is important as players look to drive up their scores higher and higher.Product Identifiers
