The Sony CMT-M373NT system is functionally identical to the CMT-M333NT. The 373 is a silver unit with light wood coloured speakers with silver grille cloth; the 333 is a very dark blue (almost black) unit and speakers with dark grey/blue grille cloth. The appearance of the units is quite understated relative to their functionality; they are very capable. Facilities include FM (with RDS)/AM (Medium Wave) tuner; CD Deck (NOT MP3 capable) with direct recording from CD to MD and/or Cassette; MD deck; Cassette deck and 25W RMS per channel amplifier. There is huge variation in reproduction quality from CD players (which surprises many who presume that all CD decks produce an identical audio input to the amplifier. They don't!). This one is very good and if the speakers are well placed they will produce great quality and surprising volume given their size. The implementation of the MD is to the final MDLP specification Atrac Type-S which gives the best possible quality to recordings made in long play modes. However I tend to only use normal mode to get better quality still; MD recording on this unit is dead easy and very good. I haven't used the cassette facilities at all! All in all a belting piece of kit for good old fashioned (pre MP3) audio. Do not confuse these units with the Sony DHC-MD333/DHC-MD373 bookshelf systems (again the 333/373 numbers are for different finishes). They are an earlier generation where the cassette deck (if required) is in another box and the MD realisation is to a much earlier standard without the MDLP long play mode.Read full review
Wonderfully compact yet good-sounding box of tricks. I bought this particular model because I needed to replace an earlier one which allowed me to play MiniDisc's. All-in-one systems that will play CD's and MD's are rare (this one too is now obsolete - I guess because MD's have died away..) It also incorporates a good tuner plus a cassette player (remember them..?)If you can find one, I'd have no hesitation in recommending you buy it.
