The streamer is just a small portion of overall cost of hearing aids and well worth it.
For the past several years my wife and I have had to use Closed Caption to watch movies on TV. Frequently the CC is too fast or out of sync with the dialog, making it difficult to follow and loosing the video affects. We now get 98% of what is being said and can finally enjoy our movies, again! I imagine that the reason the streamer works so well is because the aids and the streamer are engineered to work together. I'm not sure how well "mismatched" products would work.
Sometimes the volume gets too loud (eg a shoot-em-up scene). We have compensated for that by using the lower volumes on the hearing aids + supplementing with speakers which we can control with a remote (can't control the Streamer with a remote). Together we have a good working system.
Also easy enough for 2 people to listen to, for example, news while in different rooms (making dinner, grabbing a snack, etc.) without loosing a beat and where the video is not important (usually).
