This, a true Director's Cut, delves deeper into the intricacies and internal politics, reveals an Alexander who was at once visionary and egotist. We see the politics and intrigues of the court, realize that even though he was Alexander, his was not an absolute power within his own ranks and people. The relationship between Alexander and his male lover is clearer, but still seems to have been down-played. Since Colin Farrell has never run from homo-erotic scenes before (and does not do so in this film either,) I'm left to think that Jared Leto was the weak link that makes their relationship, a love that was to have spanned decades, markedly less credible. The lines are well delivered, but in a time and place when homosexuality was commonplace, to see the two embrace tightly without once having their lips meet seems a bit contrived. Owing to that Alexander proclaims that his lover is also widely known to be Alexander, (a historical fact) it's more than a bit tiring to see the two of them act more like uncomfortable friends when alone together. Colin Farrell is outstanding throughout, as is the entire cast (including Leto, except as above noted.) This is an engrossing account of the greatest warrior king in the history of man. The intermission is a very nice touch, and Oliver Stone should be commended for this labor of love.Read full review
I still have a few minor quibbles about this cut of the film (Angelina Jolie's Russian accent; Colin Farrel's hair really *did* look ridiculous in some scenes, etc...), but the script is actually enjoyable, the arrangement and editing are perfect for the story, and at just over three hours, you have the time to actually take in and appreciate the Old Epic sets and costuming. How this compares to the historical Alexander is far more faithful than comparable historical epics, like _Cleopatria_ or _Spartacus_, which is actually a plus, when you consider that's what Oliver Stone set out to do with this film -- create one of the fantastic historical epics that he enjoyed in his youth. I may never completely forgive him for _The Doors_, but Stone's final cut of _Alexander_ is one of the more engaging epic films in the old style, complete with Intermission.Read full review
I saw this movie in the theatrical aspect and it did not make much sense then. Alexader revivisited is what one would expect of Oliver Stone. True, its long, but it makes so much more sense. I am really glad that I bought it.
