Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish.

Something worth watching from another country
This was probably a children's classic from the moment it was written.. I do not expect much from foreign country filmmakers... This would be a shining exception.. It is not in English , but, has excellent readable sub titles.. Sometimes sub titles are done by folks who are not fluent in English and it is a bit of a challenge. t

Good fantasy, but can be scary for kids
I expected this movie to be better as I enjoyed The Shape of Water so much. Some of the strict, mean characters are similar as in both movies and the "creature" was incorporated into each story. However, Pan's Labyrinth has a much darker aspect in its story development.

Guillermo del Toro at his best in this psychological thriller!
A cinematic, masterpiece, riveting and psychologically engaging – not for kids, but profoundly, moving, like an otherworldly dream that connects you to your own subconscious issues. I needed this because my copy got damaged and I had to buy another! I use it as a teaching tool, for my older students were interested in storytelling.

I was very disappointed because didn't know the movie was in a different language & we had to read the subtitling in English. I'm terminally ill & I can't see that good so all I could do is watch the movie without the sound. It said it was in English but it wasn't.

Superior historical fiction/fantasy and one of the scariest critters ever - the Pale Man - he'll give you nightmares. Set during the Spanish Civil War and enhanced with an evil villain, bad hats and magic - this is Del Toro's masterpiece...so far.
