An elderly relative had been renting a colour television and VCR for about £20 per month and as they needed replacing she was going to get the rental company to upgrade them for her with a similar upgrade in rental fees of course! I hate to see people being exploited so pointed out she could buy a brand new - and much better - television and VCR for less than a single year's rental. Needless to say she was a bit sceptical and had reservations typical of someone of her age. You know the sort of thing; [-] "What happens if they go wrong, they cost a fortune to repair and I can't afford to call the engineer out" and [-] "If you ask me I'd be much better off renting because they sort all that out for you don't they..." To cut a long story short I stated my case; [-] Modern televisions are very reliable (not like the old valve sets) [-] In the unlikely event the television DID go wrong in the first year the shop would replace or repair it just as if she were renting. [-] Exactly the same thing applies to the VCR. [-] On the other hand, if either one went wrong AFTER the first year she could afford to throw it away and buy a replacement because she would STILL be at least £50 better off (ie: the saving over the annual rental). [-] Either way any replacement [television or VCR] would be even cheaper than the one that died and almost certainly cheaper than the annual rental she was already saving. Anyway I took her to Dixons where we found a nice little MATSUI television set and a matching MATSUI VP 9406 VCR. I asked to see the mananger and persuaded him to knock a further £20 off the price as a 'special package deal for a pensioner' - yeah, I'm pretty good at haggling. (I enjoy it too!) Well, that was about 16 years ago and, guess what, that MATSUI VP 9406 VCR is STILL going strong. As good as ever. That's enough background, what about the VCR itself? Setting up the unit was straightforward, everything was connected up and all channels tuned in in a matter of minutes The remote control fits nicely in the hand, is simple to use and programming timer events is simplicity itself. The quality of recordings is more than acceptable for a two head machine even in LP mode and the automatic tracking copes very well with prerecorded tapes. It has only seen light usage so I have only had to take the cover off and clean the heads once since we got it for her and I think that is pretty impressive! All in all this is a fantastic VCR for the price and it has worn exceptionally well over the years. It was money well spent, a sound investment so if you're looking for a cheap reliable machine you could do a lot worse... Oh, and if you're wondering about the elderly relative, she's still going strong too. I guess you could say they're a well matched pair! Regards tbodRead full review
Just as described. Thanks.

Basic but good machine does what it needs to but not high quality. So far other than playing old video tapes and the odd bit of recording it hasn’t done much else, so if your after a basic machine to play the kids or your old tapes on this is a good machine for just that.
