I have used this item before, at my old job. Over there, we needed to make about 4 DVDs a day from a live recording, thru a Composite connection. It worked flawless. Very easy to use. I never had to open the manual. Just record, stop, finalize - and the disc is ready. Now I bought one for myself, in order to make DVD outputs from Final Cut Pro to give to my clients for review. I have tried other recorders prior to choosing this model, and I still think this was the best choice for me. You can't beat the price, and it does everything any other recorder does. Two complaints I have about it: 1. It does take a bit too long sometimes to finalize a disk, longer than different recorders would take (the Panasonic EZ28 for example). But that, compared to being at least 3 times cheaper, is not really a disadvantage. 2. It will not allow firewire connection in from a computer, which would be nice. You can use the firewire port to connect to a camera and record video that way, but you cannot output from a computer. There are actually very few recorders on the market that will do that, so this is not a complaint against the recorder itself necessarily, but against most DVD recorders. (It has to do with the fact that both the recorder and the computer attempt to act as the master on the firewire connection) Overall, this is a great product for the money (especially if you buy it refurbished).Read full review
I do a lot of backups of my DVD movies, primarily for my 4-year old daughter who likes to handle them improperly. I previously bought a Toshiba HD-A2 High Def. DVD player, but it was very slow in powering-up and often froze or skipped during playback of DVD's and audio CD's (especially if compressed during the backup). And a firmware update from Toshiba did not solve the problem. So with HD-DVD apparently not invited to the ball (you go, Blu-Ray!), I decided to look for a DVD-recorder to replace the HD player. I took a chance and stayed with Toshiba, but got the recorder for about 2/3 what I paid for the HD player. It still upconverts to 1080, powers-up a lot faster, and seems to have no problem playing about any kind of DVD disc. I'm loving it! The one drawback is the limited number of connectivity options. Although there is an HDMI and an optical output, there are only component, S-Video, coax, and analog audio/video inputs. I've only had time to do a handful of recordings on it, but it's easy to use and offers just enough to fill a void before launching full-bore into the top-tier home theater units. Can't go wrong for the price! So...anyone want a nearly new HD unit cheap? :-)Read full review
The recorder is very good quality, but the menu's aren't intuitive. It has the same limitations that all DVD-R's have, so no reason to gripe. It isn't very compatible with Dish (you can't do automatic recordings since the dish doesn't have a remote code for it) but that's a weakness of Dish. If you don't close the DVD's properly you can't play them on other DVD players. You'll need to spend at least a couple hours going over the directions if you want it to do what you wish. Operator error can happen easily with this machine. You can't select the video frame for the icon you want for a recording. You can do this with most players. This may be operator error on my part, but I haven't figured out how to yet. You get HDMI output which is nice for your large screen TV. If you don't have a large TV, you should buy a standard DVD recorder for a third the price.Read full review
I use this weekly to make DVDs of church services. So far it has worked quite well. Set-up is super easy and the quality of the DVDs is much better than the ones I was making on a computer. It has saved me a ton of time as the DVDs are recorded real time. It takes about 5 minutes for the disk to finalize once the service is over. Compared to the hour plus to transfer the video from the camcorder to the computer and another hour plus to format and burn a DVD, this has been great. I should have gotten one a long time ago. Bill.
Pro Makes Excellent Recordings Nice chapter function / setup Plays discs that my Samsung refused to recognize Easy to setup for recordings Very good picture quality HD upconversion with HDMI cable Easy and quick formatting Con Very noisy when loading discs No integrated tuner Overall I am very pleased with this purchase - I bought this one to replace a Samsung recorder that just didn't cut it. This one, hands down, is 100 times better than the Samsung. The quality of the picture, the ease of setting up and recording, the HD upconversion, all make this a good buy for those looking at getting into entry level recorders.
I have been searching months and found a nice product. The product is so light! We need extra cables to connect our existence TV, a satellite Receiver and DVD/VHS Combo. We now could enjoy Region 2(Japan) DVD from our relatives. We still need to try dub from our camcorder(mini DV) to DVD which is supposed to be able to watch with Region 2(Japan) DVD player. Our TV is and VCR are old and our reception of TV signal had been weird but now we have much clear picture and nicer sound!! The price and the quality... you should buy!! I would like to put 5 stars... but I don't know whether recorded DVD can be played with Japanese DVD player yet... so I just put 4 stars.
I have been a fan of Toshiba DVD recorders for a long time and over the past 25 years I have owned three units of the same series. It has been my experience that each unit lasts approximately 10 years of heavy use. Since they are not manufactured any longer, I had to buy them used among the many that are offered online. If you are into recording on DVD like me, I recommend this Toshiba line of DVD recorders but advise you to be very careful when buying a use one. Do an extensive research and buy from a reputable dealer that has tested the unit and found it in good working order. Avoid private individuals.

This is a relatively little and lightweight unit, but it will read AVI off of DVD like there is even a menu. This makes it a great littleunit if you don't have the expertise to copy your say Flip or AVI camera, just burn them on there, and off you go. It creates a menu for you. I assume it also reads MP3. I am using it as an upconvert and burner and although it was a refurb, it was an exceptional value delivered at around $80 or $90. The controls were easy to decipher, and the HDMI output is what it should be. Get this model if you can. I have never had a Toshiba product that didn't outlast my desire to replace it but I realize that's probably rare. I still have a receiver I bought in the 1970s. It sounds great. Has a wood case, but I am dating myself.
Toshiba has always been a well respected product in my opinion... I have had a toshiba big screen for more than 8 years and I have always loved it! I bought the d-r400 because of toshiba's reputation as well as some of the features! I am over all very happy with the product. The only thing that I would say is bad about it is that it's pretty slow loading (not a big deal), and it is rather noisy while loading and various other functions--which isn't bothersome while viewing--but I was a little suprised that w/ a Toshiba product that it would be noisy ans seemingly cumbersome--that's all
The unit works fine but one feature I don't like is that there is no adjustable timer. IE: I want to record for 1hr and 45 min. There is a quick setting ie: 2hrs 4hrs. and 30 min adjustable length. If I want to do the 1 hr and 45 min. I have to go into the menu and setup the timer like I was recording a future show. Time on/'time off/ day. etc. All the long way. My other recorders I can say..record for the time length and hit start. Other than that no problems.
