Hard to get Ottilie on vinyl or CD, as she appeared only on guest appearances in Chris Barber concerts. Therefore, this compilation is a must for Ottie freaks!
Ottilie Patterson & Chris Barber - That Patterson Girl
One of the few things I regret no longer having from my distant youth was an LP entitled "Chris Barber's Blues Book", featuring Ottilie Patterson with the Chris Barber band. I can recall its cover to this day.
I purchased "That Patterson Girl" as a CD to see whether my recollection of her sound was accurate. It was. The worst thing about this CD is the slightly naff title. The recording to CD appears to be to a good standard and Ottilie is in fine voice. You either love her voice or can't see what all the buzz is about. To me, though, she has a strong, deep timbre, surprising for such a slight figure and redolent of some of the "greats" of the blues tradition. Inevitably, some of the tracks appeal more than others - and compared with "Chris Barber's Blues Book", there is a wider variety on this CD. The numbers with Blues in their title all came across well, with the band working together to good effect. I also particularly enjoyed one or two folksy numbers, such as "Careless Love", and some more up-beat tracks, such as "Salty Dog".
