One of the best album's ever, a mixture of rock and ballard all with Costello's original energy and style, from the haunting Alison to the frantic mystery dance - classic songs that sound as fresh and vibrant today as they originally did 30 years ago - get it, you wont be disappointed.
This is Costello pre- "The Attractions". The Nick Lowe production is clean with a stripped down clarity showcasing the genius of the songs. Costello's Lyrics are at their freshest here from the wistful lilting "Alison" a poignant sinister love/hate heartbreaker to the dry cynical wit of "Waiting for the End of the World". Every lyric is entertainment for the mind, every beat a treat for the feet. I've gorged myself on this album and I still want more!
I bought this Cd because it was listed and recommended in the Stereophile Records to die for. It is to consider the historical period (1978) in which the record was made and the current prevailing style. In this respect this kind of music can be considered very good. However it all depends on personal tastes. Frankly, though Elvis Costello plays and sings very well, this is not my preferred kind of rock and roll music. Surely its sounds very different from Nick Lowe's style, which I positively like more. I would define it "punk-rock": good if you like it, not that good if you don't.
A great album bringing many happy memories, including a wonderful pair of red shoes I used to have
