This is a very early gangster movie, and hence is rather primitive in style — it still uses a few text screens telling you what happened. That considered, the characterization and locations are quite impressive and Edward G is not to be missed. See it once, but you probably won't want to see it again.

To be honest I was really looking forward to watching this movie 🎥 but it wasn’t as good as I thought. Wouldn’t watch it again.☹️

This is one of the great gangster classics from 1931 . I had to see it and it took me a long time to get it . On the internet movie database this was given a 7.4 rating out of a possible 10 . I can honestly understand that because it didnt grip me just as much as the great and magnificent James Cagney movies which came from from around that period in time . It is a must see for lovers of classic gangster movies but its not just as powerful as ' white heat ' or ' the public enemy ' from the same era . I know its wrong to compare this movie with cagney movies but im just trying to be honest here and let people know what to expect before they commit themselves to a buy . Its around 76 mins long and is very enjoyable but for me its not one i could watch over and over again like the rest of my gangster movie collection . The main character , ' Rico ' a.k.a 'Little Caesar' was very charismatic but not in the same league as the much loved James Cagney who let people see there was an honourble side to criminals and had the audience behinnd him whatever badness he took part in . I would have to agree with the internet movie database and say this was around a 7 out of 10 . Good but not excellent . I will watch it again but not for another 10 years or so .Read full review
Bought this because had read reviews on it, along with its 1930s cinema relatives - The Public Enemy, Angels with Dirty Faces, and Scarface. I thought Edward G. Robinson was great as aspiring mobster, Rico. Plenty of tense action for an old film, even though this picture is black n white. There were some scenes where the acting was not what you'd call 'skilled', about halfway through. This was reasonably visible. I have the DVD of Scarface, also, in my gangster collection and I'd highly recommend this one to accompany it, or get both if you don't have either, or if you're a fan of Robinson and Cagney's early works....or if you simply just enjoy a good film ;=D
