The world is populated by "Hemophages", people infected by a virus who have vampire like characteristics and super-human strength. Those not infected want to get rid of them. Hence the battles. A little boy "No:6" holds a cure in his blood and Ultraviolet must protect him.
Take Aeon Flux and mix in scenes from Kill Bill and the Matrix, then remove any semblence of a coherent plot and crucially, any characterisation and you have Ultraviolet. I like a good sci-fi rampage as much as the next spotty teenager, but it needs to be gripping, have tension and have a plot that, while perhaps may not be believable, that at least you can suspend your disbelief while watching it. You can read the synposis for the plot, but what comes across here is mindless comic-book action in which there is no tension at all because Violet can dodge bullets from a dozen assassins all stood in a circle. The action sequences therefore simply become ridiculous and lose all dramatic impact. When this is combined with the sloppy storyline - factions introduced and then killed without any explanation and wholesale lack of charactisation, it all turns into a ho-hum, clock-watching experience. On top of that, there's a strange effect applied to most of the movie which makes everything look like it's going to be output for video game footage.Read full review
Milla Jovivich stars as Violet, a haemophage who is sent to infiltrate a Government building and pick up a case containing a weapon that is supposed to be the answer to destroying the remaining haemophage survivors on Earth who are on the verge of extinction. She manages to recover the case but opens it against orders. Inside, she discovers a human child (Cameron Bright), an innocent in the struggle but who’s blood may hold the answer to end the war once and for all. When her people try to kill the boy, she protects him and in doing so, she is forced to go on the run from both her own people and the corrupt and vicious government determined to get him back. Violet is assisted by her friend and fellow haemophage Kurt (William Fichtner), a vampire scientist who clings to the hope of finding a cure to this form of vampirism. Together, the two of them they try to uncover the truth about their disease and to stop the destruction of their people.Read full review
Fantastic Film!!! Beautiful art direction and stunning visuals, Milla is wonderful for her excellent, unique acting abilities; deep emotions swim under a cool exterior - part of Milla's trademark style but delivered here with absolute precision and total humanity. William Fichtner also has a great but understated role in this as a scientist living in a mobile trailer that expands into a voluminous laboratory due to the 'flat space' technology of the times, another fantastic metaphor extended throughout the movie with incredible beauty and humor. Milla has a lot of cool things to say about this (and the architecture) in the film's commentary section. The film is visually the most elegant and stunning I have seen, largely due to the crispness of execution and the subtle intelligence of art design and choreography utilized throughout - the scenery and style of the movie are a "vision" - and the actors seamlessly make themselves part of this world. It is a very graceful yet cutting movie that packs quite a graphic punch but is also willing to explore great storytelling and is often highly poetic in dialogue and theme – half the story is interwoven in the visual narrative – so if you are not careful, some of the delicate nuances of this film can fly straight over your head. So do not underestimate this film or the story! Its sparseness of design and execution are part of what makes it wonderful. Visually it is just superb! The DVD also has some very interesting special features about the filming locations etc... All in all - riveting plot for a sci-fi - full of depth and humor and cool ideas. The story line was rich and sharply executed, not laden down by excess and useless dialogue like so many films – but minimalist yet powerful and understated dialogue, where every word counts (like a haiku) – this movie is light and graceful yet full of substance, and the fight scenes were awesome! If you don't "get" this movie, don't write it off – watch it again and come around!Read full review
Well if you like sci fi action movies like the matrix aeon flux you are in for a martial arts flashy extravaganza with great fight scenes and amazing special effects you will be coming back for more! worth a watch!
This is a good film i guess but it does feel like it drags on abit. Its not one that many people could watch over and over. However it is worth a watch. Has some good fight scenes but thats about it. After the hype it was given when it came out you would expect more from it.
This movie is a futuristic look at the world starring Milla Jovovich who is brilliant in these heroin type roles & she is a very sexy actress, the part she plays is someone that has been infected by a strange virus making her & others like her a type of vampyre doomed to die, although there is no blood drinking as it's not that type of vampyre. The roll she plays is a highly trained fighting machine good with guns & she has an awesome sword that she is well skilled with. If this type of genre is to your taste then i highly reccomend adding it to your collection.
I was a bit apprehensive about buying a 'used' DVD,but I'm more than delighited with it and will certainly be doing it in the future. I like this type of movie because it can be watched over and over again, like all the Super Heros movies, pure escapism. So,there is nothing to dislike, the very opposite.
TOO MUCH RUNNING ABOUT....COULD HAVE PUT MORE INTO IT.....THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A BIT MORE VAMPIRE LIKE....WHEN THEY CALL THEMSELVES VAMPIRES BUT DO NOT ACT LIKE THEM. IT WAS GOOD THOUGH. THE KIDS LIKED IT, BUT GOT A LITTLE BIT CONFUSED. ACTING GOOD. OVERALL ENJOYED IT BUT WOULD LEAVE IT A LONG WHILE BEFORE WATCHING AGAIN.
