This two dvd set is Ginger Rogers at her most wonderful. In the Major and the Minor Ginger is entirely believable as a 12 year old girl who is whisked off to a military academy by an army major who she met on a train while trying to get home on a half price ticket.Only one person realises she is not 12, another 12 year old. All kinds of complications ensue from this deception ending with Ginger falling in love with the major and he with her. For lovers of the Astaire/Rogers movies there are two references to past glories, one about dancing cheek to cheek and Ginger tap dances. With her face scrubbed clear of any makeup and shiny she is a very credible 12 year old. In Batchelor Mother Ginger stars with David Niven as a batchelor girl who finds an abandoned baby and no-one will believe that it isn't hers. Once again Ginger is entirely credible as the character she is playing. This is a real treat for Ginger Rogers fans, just watch the various expressions that flit across her face while she is listening to one of the other characters speak and you will see that she is not just an actress but an actress who lives the role.Read full review
A 1942 story that might well be frowned on in these paranoid times: a cash-strapped woman pretends to be a 12-year-old girl to obtain a child's railway ticket and an army officer she meets on the train is attracted to the "child" and whisks her off to a military academy, where large numbers of young men are soon drooling over her. The child/woman falls for the Major and funny complications ensue. Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland are the minor and the major. Directed by Billy Wilder.
