This 1968 adaptation of the Tolstoy tome is a lavish affair and calculating for inflation, is the most expensive film ever committed to celluloid. This classic Russian tale of love and conflict intertwines the romance between a young countess and her unhappily married lover with the grim battlefields of the 1812 Napoleonic invasion. However director Sergei BondarchukÆs film covers a much bigger canvas and is rich in meticulous detail and emotional nuance.

A shadow of the magnificent film screened in the 1960s
I saw this in the cinema in 1969 and it was magnificent. It really was like having a time machine and seeing the scenes as they would have been: enormous battle scenes, huge landscapes, magnificent balls, palaces and stately homes. Apparently it was shot, using two sets of cameras, in 70mm and 35mm. As screened in most cinemas, it was 70mm, but that film is said to have so deteriorated as to be unusable. The DVDs (and VHS before that) are taken from the 35mm film, which cuts out half of the 70mm picture. Much of the impact of the original - tragically - is therefore lost.

Russian epic film version of a classic book.a lot of work went into making it a compelling watch. I liked the strong wind effect blowing leaves in one of the Battle scenes.

Visually stunning but lacks character depth of the book and the deep psychologicial examination that Tolstoy gives us. It is a must watch though.
