My wife's reaction to this DVD was "This looks dated". Dated it may be but still a stunning movie. As a piece of history it gives a good understanding of what life was like in occupied Europe in the post war years. As a "who dunnit" it excels. As a romance it smoulders. As a thriller it has a brilliant chase. As a lesson in cinematography it has night scenes and shadows that have never been bettered. As an ensemble piece it has the period's finest actors. What more can I say. Buy it!
It's one of those films which regularly is held up as one of the critic's 'all time greats'. With all of these benchmark pieces of film, I have to put that aside, and decide for myself. On any level, it's a stunning piece of work. On a basic level, it certainly entertains. The film is set in that odd post war period of confusion, a void within which everything is transient, and nothing is guaranteed. This is a fertile ground for a great piece of cinema. The soundtrack has to be mentioned, you're sure to have heard it before watching the film. The cinematography is an absolute masterclass. With a story and screenplay by Graham Greene, Carol Reed directing, and Orson Welles in a part which has got to be one of his most enthralling, how can you go wrong? Trevor Howard is a personal favourite in this film. Some pieces of art seem to be fortunate enough to lie at the apex of all those involved within it. The Third Man seems to be such a piece. Is it for everyone? No. Universal appeal tends to be the hallmark of the bland. Ignore the reviews, watch the trailer. It may not be for you, and there's nothing wrong with that. My opinion is that this is one of 'the classics' which I wholeheartedly agree with.Read full review
