John sets out in his Y reg Austin Ambassador with a team that includes Martin Parr on camera to test his theory that people get nicer the further north you go. In a series of understated and charming encounters with the locals, that include the Tourist Board official storyteller and a garage owner who fixes his windscreen wipers for free, we are taken eventually to Muckle Flugga at the very northern tip of the Shetlands. He meets the residents of the last (or first) cottage in Britain and suggests to them that they must be the nicest folks in the nation. A charming and laid back documentary with some fine examples of John's eccentric songs on the journey, particularly memorable when he gives a concert to the indifferent residents of an old folks home. Well worth a watch.
As an avid fan of John Shuttleworth I was rolling around on the floor for the first 30mins. However, the joke is stretched a little too far over the next hour or so and will leave non-fans totally bemused. Overall though this is a treat for John Shuttleworth fans, a few good songs thrown in and lots of action in John's famous Austin Ambassador (Y-reg).
I bought this DVD for my mother. He's the only character that we agree is a comic genius though I suspect for very different reasons.
