This was one of the first movies I ever watched on vhs video. A chance meeting between two people from completely opposite spectrums during WWII, reunited under the most unusual of circumstances. The role of superiority between the two has been reversed and amid the slow mundane duties of a night porter the pulse raises as the outcome of the reunion promises to deliver both inevitability and regret. This movie oozes class, it’s austerity is suffocating, although it progresses at no more than a snails pace it is captivating. The moods expressed from the decadence of the Joy Division Nazi parlours to the stark opulence of upper class socialites blend as one. Be prepared to watch a master piece that will live with you for ever.

Dirk Bogarde was one of my favourite film stars.I have quite a few films and books of him. When I first saw the Night Porter,I was impressed by the acting, the story and the location. It was told, not in a symperthic way but as it was.I am very interested in the period of the german nazi period,so that was my first interest in the film, but found that there was more to it. I had it originally as on VHS,but I had to have a copy of it on DVD.
One of Bogarde's unusual movies and shows his real talent

The war is still a recent memory in a Europe of shifting borders and selective memories. Where yesterdays ally is today's enemy and the Reich may be gone but is far from forgotten. Cavani's darker than dark exploration of love and its many possible causes and expressions asks more questions than it answers. Does Max and Lucia's love flower despite the violence and degradation around them, or is it something more twisted which could not have existed without that backdrop? Is it something within them which they must feed in spite of themselves or do they consciously seek to return to a past which the world around them seeks to forget, to deny or to punish? The wider question being is it better to comply with the moral fashions and political correctness of the times; to embrace the revisions of history and live to a ripe old age. Or is the one life we are given so precious that to refuse to be true to oneself, regardless of the physical pain this may entail, is to negate the meaning of that life and to end up deader than dead? On the other hand you may just admire it for the usual reasons: sex, nazis and Charlotte Rampling as a Tim Burton take on Marlene Dietrich before Tim Burton was Tim Burton. A cooler-than-liquid-helium classic.Read full review
