There he meets police cryptologist Sophie Neveu, the granddaughter of the murdered curator. A number of symbols and riddles have been found at the murder scene and the duo set about solving the complex mystery. However, Bezu Fache (Jean Reno, LEON)--the police officer in charge of the investigation--believes that Langdon is implicated in the killing. This leads to Langdon being chased by the French police as he attempts to solve the mystery by following secret clues found in the works of artist Leonardo Da Vinci. Langdon and Neveu escape to England to continue their search for clues in the mystery that has the possibility to upset the very foundations of Christianity, a search that brings them into conflict with Catholic organisation Opus Dei and their dangerous monk Silas (Paul Bettany, GANGSTER NO. 1). Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (I, ROBOT) manages to transform Dan Brown's tremendously successful novel into a thrilling and fast paced script that is expertly directed by Ron Howard (APOLLO 13). The film was the target of criticism by the Roman Catholic Church but this didn't stop THE DA VINCI CODE becoming a worldwide smash hit.

Top marks. Contains a lot of probable real ancient history as well as definite real ancient history. Ralph Ellis books which goes into the possible truth of who 'Jesus' and Mary Madgelane were (that is if they actually existed as real figures, rather than as created figures upon whom Gnostics hung their stories/parables. Reportedly, one Gnostic Bishop stormed from the Council of Nicea shouting "You fools! You have taken what is not true and made it true!", so we can only guess whether or not 'Jesus' etc was real. However, the word for 'fool' was mistranslated sometimes from a word that meant 'Godless', so maybe that Bishop called others at the Council of Nicea 'Godless'. Strong words). Even today, Islam holds that 'Jesus' was a great prophet but only a man. The description of the Holy Grail might very well be correct and could have referred to Mary Magdelaine, to Mary Mother of 'Jesus', or even to the pagan goddess Sophia. Note the name of the granddaughter in the film is 'Sophie', and that a Latin modified 'e' is sounded like an English 'a'. A lot of Judaism emanated from paganism (Shlomo Sands wrote an interesting book on it and it worth reading even just the short synopsis of his 'Invention of....' to gain a rough idea of this. Obviously, Christianity, Islam and more recently Rastafarianism emanated from Judaism at least in large parts, so it could be that the early Gnostics still had some remnants of Sophia worship - although personally I doubt it and I suspect the Holy Grail referred to Mary Magdelaine. It's one of those that's always debatable though. As a side note, it's 'interesting' that the counterpart of the AI Alexa was named 'Sophia'. Hmmm. Anyway, enjoy the film.
