The Wicker Man is a brilliant film which everyone should see at least once in their life. It is the tale of a Police officer who travels from the mainland of Scotland to investigate the apparent disappearance of a young girl on a remote Scottish island. Edward Woodward is excellent and at his very best as Sergeant Howie, a simple and deeply religious man who, still a virgin, is "engaged to be married" and saving himself for his fiancee. He finds Summerisle a disturbing place. Everywhere he goes he is confronted by unsettling images, baudy songs, public nudity, overtly sexual behaviour, phallic symbols, strange customs and 'religious' practices very different from his own. Sex is everywhere he looks and he is constantly tempted but, being a good Christian, resists. The islanders - who are evasive and hostile - initially deny all knowledge of the missing girl yet the more he investigates the more he is convinced they are all lying to him; the girl has been murdered and some sinister conspiraracy is afoot. When he meets with Lord Summerisle [Christopher Lee] he is told how things are done on the island and is disgusted. Reaching the end of his tether he calls the islanders "a bunch of pagans" adding "Have these children never heard of Jesus?" His personal belief system is attacked from all sides and with his confidence undermined he is led to acts of desperation and, ultimately, to the horrific conclusion of this tale. The film has an interesting soundtrack. Ranging from uplifting to hauntingly ethereal yet always appropriate it sets the scene and builds a sense of atmosphere from the very first scene to the very last. This is a true horror film, intelligently written yet dark and disturbing as much for what is NOT said or shown. The true horror lies with the islanders and their actions. I will not say more for fear of spoiling the end. If you have not yet seen this film do a search, put in a bid and buy a copy. You should be able to pick one up on eBay for under a fiver including P&P. Just make sure you get the right one. That's the 1973 original with Edward Woodward. You certainly have a treat in store! Watch and enjoy... Regards tbodRead full review
Classic film, they really dont make em' like they used to. It's the sort of film that is bizarre from the beginning and I love it! Lord Summerisle's long black haired wig and dress does it for me everytime. Christopher Lee gives a world class performance and justifies why he is a National Treasure!!! Whatever you do though please don't bother with the Nicholas Cage remake its awful! You simply cannot compare the two films, The original is the best in this case and well worth the watch.
a perfect example of what still might happen to this day take one copper and a bunch of weird people and BOOM scandalous behaviour, murder? or is it never trust anyone who likes to watch a burning 100ft+ wood man with live bait inside. fantastic music and great scenery in the remote parts of scotland i would recommend this film to anyone who just likes the unusual behaviour scene in this film i rate it 10/10.
One of these favourite movies you always watch when you come upon it late at night, and, even better if you buy this version. You get the full (less cut) version plus the music from the soundtrack in fixed stereo format - a great package. Read the reviews on IMDB or Amazon and look for a bargain on ebay.
