Product Information

Michael Apted, whose claim to fame until now has been the respected 7 UP documentary series, directs this lavish costume drama whose heart is as big as its budget. Though a marked departure, AptedÆs idealistic interests are well served by the story, which is based on the true tale of the 18th-century British politician William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd, who played Horatio Hornblower in the HORNBLOWER series). Though as a young man Wilberforce is torn between politics and the church, he is inspired to action by John Newton (Albert Finney), a penitent monk who is haunted by his past as a slave-ship captain. Wilberforce makes it his mission to end slavery in the British Empire, and, aided by a small band of radical thinkers and unlikely supporters, he annually presents a bill for abolition to Parliament. When the war with France generates a patriotism in the people that makes opposition to slavery seem seditious, Wilberforce becomes disillusioned, and he retires to his cousinÆs (Nicholas Farrell) house, physically ill and emotionally destroyed by his perceived failure. When he meets the beautiful and righteous Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai, AS YOU LIKE IT), however, he gains new determination to pursue his dream of abolition. The talented cast includes Michael Gambon as Lord Fox, an old gent who turns out to be more lucid than anyone would have guessed, as well as Senegalese musician Youssou NÆDour as Oloudaqh Equiano, a regal former slave turned activist. Terrence Malick (BADLANDS), who produced the film, leaves his mark in the stunning visuals.

Amazing Grace that saved a sinner like John Newton who testified " That saved a wretch like me" "I once was was lost but now am found was blind but now I see" Wonderful testimony to the dogged determination of William Wilberforce. but most of all, A testimony to JESUS CHRIST who came in our nature to procure a people for himself, from every kindred, Nation and tongue, who delivered all who believe from the slavery of sin. AMAZING SAVIOUR, AMAZING GRACE, AMAZING PROSPECT OF HEAVEN. WILL YOU BE THERE? Grace is not of works lest any man should boast, grace is an acceptance that of ourselves we can do nothing, we simply cannot transform our lives and turn away from our sins and a casting of ourselves upon him through faith.We must lay our own righteousness aside and be clothed with the righteousness of Christ. Amazing Grace is Amazing!
Very powerful movie and story of the life of Wilberforce, including John Newton. Especially relevant as 2023 is the 250th Anniversary of the Hymn "Amazing Grace". Highly recommended.

My son loved this film. He is studying slavery in history and this was great to give him a better understanding of the subject. It was not the sort of film that he would usually watch but he thoroughly enjoyed it.

The most exciting thing about this film was dropping the remote control whilst seeking the fast forward button. Save your money or buy some crisps instead, they will entertain you far better.
