  • LOUIS MALLE - AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS - (1987) / (OPTIMUM VIDEO)

A film I loved when it first came out in 1987 - Film is in FRENCH with ENGLISH subtitles. The story of the relationship and friendship that develops between two young boys, one Jewish, the other French having been evacuated during the Second World War. This is just so touching and beautifully filmed; it's a movie I never get tired of seeing. I still have my original VHS on Curzon Video, but this re-mastered version on Optimum also contains special features that do not appear on the original VHS release. Sleeve does however contain a misprint - it is shown as being Black & White - it's NOT- the film was made in Colour and this Optimum release IS in full colour. The kids in this are amazing... especially Gaspard who plays the central character 'Julien Quentin'. He was born in 1975 and was just 12 when the film was made. Possibly one of the most memorable 'Childhood Actor' performances in recent times. A film everyone can enjoy - Don't be put off by the fact that it's subtitled - the captions are really well done and you WILL be able to follow what's going on. (I only got Grade 2 CSE French at school, and with the aid of the subtitles, the story makes perfect sense to me. What doesn't, and never will, are the circumstances regarding the events that surround the plot - that children should be treated differently because of their religious beliefs and background. If you don't have this in your DVD Collection .... er.. GLARING ommission!!! FIVE STARS.

  • Just a brilliant rich film

It is an A level film on the Edexcel syllabus . So a brilliant film which deals with the war, the Dreadful Nazis, the Germans as a nation, the Church , antisemitism, cold weather , lack of food rationing and more. A fabulous film that you want see lots of time because it’s characters are. So genuine and the acting is excellent.
