Additional InformationErmanno Olmi's THE TREE OF WOODEN CLOGS presents a year in the life of peasants in northern Italy near the turn of the 20th century. A little boy breaks his precious pair of clogs, which he needs for his long trek to school. Desperate for wood to make a new pair, his father sneaks into a prized grove in their small village. When he's caught, the unfeeling, wealthy landlord punishes him severely for his transgression. This small incident, and the various viewpoints of the peasants, reveal in beautiful detail rural life under oppressive rule.

  • No holds barred when it comes to slaughtering animals to eat!

Used to have this, but probably loaned it to someone who never returned it. Very interesting insight in rural Italy in the late 1890's. Acted by locals.

  • Unique, brilliant frilm.

Saw this film at the cinema 30 years ago and it's still as endearing and enthralling as it was then. Beautiful scenery, faultless acting and unique storyline. Really special.....

  • Wonderful film.

I did not have a clue what this film was all about, never even heard of it. Then I read a film star say it was the best film ever. I bought it and was not disappointed, quite a thought provoking film.
