Love the DVD remember the film being made in this area, had a friend from school star in it, and another friend owned the bus that was in it, so great memories, and it arrived so quick
I bought the DVD as a result of having just finished the book. The DVD is a superbly accurate account in 13 episodes of this complex novel, with many characters intimately followed on time-lines that often lead or lag the main thrust of the story, and so leave one on tenterhooks of anticipation. Perhaps the brass music in episode 2 was a little too well executed, but one must not forget that the north east is blessed with excellent brass bands to this day. The recording quality of the sound track is a little disappointing in those sections which relate to quiet conversation. However many of the scenes of squalor, with real babies in distress, would be hard to replicate in these more sensitive times, and the DVD (and book) are thoroughly recommended as a representation of small-town aspirations and rivalries in the 1950s.Read full review
This ITV award wining mini series is highly watchable. Having watched the series when it was first viewed I was interested to see it again. Set in the north east of England between the Wars it has some resonance with today's world. The machinations behind the scenes of the local councilors is reminiscent of the present day's government scandals. The story take the viewer a long way. It follows the lives of both rich and poor and the effects of local government decisions on those lives. Excellent.
As it was made in the 70s it is a bit slower than we are used to now, but this didn't detract from the enjoyment. It also stays close to the book, some of the dialogue being exactly as was written. It was nice to see Clive Swift (Hyacinth Buckets husband) as Councillor Huggins!
