A popular American cop show from the 1970s, made for family viewing. A mix of action, humour, and minor crime on the freeways of LA.
This a light entertainment cop show from the late 1970s, made for early evening family viewing. In fact, nobody gets seriously hurt, and the crimes are mostly of the public nuisance and misdemeanour variety. It's all set on the freeways of sunny LA, and the mood is very upbeat, with mild humour. Baker and Poncherello partner each other as two young motorcycle cops, a year or so out of the academy. Baker is the calm, sensible one, with all the practical skills one would expect from a farming background. Poncherello, on the other hand, is a messy risk taker, with a big smile for the young women he meets, and ambitious to strike it rich. Much of the energy of the show comes from Poncherello's charm and enthusiasm, and much of the humour is generated by the failure of his financial and dating ambitions, and from the fallout of his attempts to help motorists in distress. In addition to this, there's a fair amount of action. Each episode usually starts with Baker & Poncherello spotting a motoring infraction, which is often the pointer to some larger issue. There are two or three high speed chases per episode, as well as a couple of medium-sized stunts. The day is punctuated by briefings and run-ins with the sergeant who runs their unit. Some of the casting owes more to looks than acting talent. However, everything is kept very innocent and happy, in a style we seem to have lost today.
