OK so this is a board book. Board books are aimed at toddlers too young to understand how to turn pages gently. However, the actual content in this book seems to be aimed at older children around 3 years old who do not need a board book. The pages are very sturdy obviously, which makes the flaps tougher and less likely to tear, but the text is too complex for little ones under 2. The toddlers enjoy lifting the flaps, but I have to completely disregard the text and make up my own words, like "Ooh look, Mummy birdie has wiggly worms", "It's pecky bird, he's pecked a hole" and "Who's under here? It's Baby Deer". The pictures are sweet and well drawn. There's a lot going on on every page with plenty to discover. I'm very particular with my children's books, we don't have a lot of space so they have to earn their keep. Toddlers prefer clear simple rhyming books and stories - this is really just an information book, which children don't seek out until around age 4, so it doesn't get 5 stars. I give it a star for the flaps, a star for sturdiness, a star for the illustrations and a star for the holes they like to poke their fingers through. It loses a star for the text. Too much information and too complex.
