ReviewsThe Telegraph - With fine performances, a welcome absence of jingoism and the beginning of a trajectory of inevitable tragedy, this offered a solid foundation for a serial which will surely accumulate emotional impact night after night.

  • I would Advocate this Production is worth seeing

Against the panoply of productions about the Great War i would advocate that it is worth viewing. My reason being it contains aspects not covered in other productions. The characters are engaging and do draw you into the experience of war. My only amendment i would make if i was producing would be the final scene. But the DVD is still worth viewing.

  • Good BBC fictional drama series, probably the best World War One TV drama since "The Trench".

Passing Bells is an excellent watch for all types of viewers, and exactly what you expect from a BBC sponsored short drama series. It is based around two soldiers, one German, one English who paths intertwine throughout the story. It may not be as gritty as "The Trench", but the main actors are exemplary, and lead you into believing in their characters throughout, and they are supported by a good cast. The set and scenery is unbelievably realistic, for a drama series, and you get the feeling if they had a hollywood budget this could have been a great blockbuster film. The writing is full of cliche and sound bites you have heard before... "It'll be over by Christmas" and "Will it ever end?" and so on, and seeing the prospective from both side is a modern way of writing about this war, and very P.C., and it certainly has the modern, and perhaps naive, message that the two soldiers are just pawns in the great scheme of things. However this doesn't detract too much from the fantastic drama that unfurls as the series progresses through the war. Summary: Although perhaps not totally and historically accurate, and perhaps over-dramatised in some ways, Passing Bells is well worth a watch for all the family. Nice to see this subject covered during the centenary of the war to end all wars! Add this to your BBC drama collection!
