Reviews"...No one bellows like Glenn Danzig...in full Conan-the-Rocker splendor...also...a few dark brooding ballads, a downright arty piece...and more actual singing than shouting...Plus their sense of humor remains intact..." - Rating: A-, 6 - Good - "...Like Blue Oyster Cult, The Doors or The Stooges, Danzig capture something that is bleak and threatening, a little bit Edgar Allan Poe and Dostoevsky...", 3 Stars - Good - "...A little more diversity and a significant tightening up of the songwriting quality has resulted in a dark, moody, and at times powerfully evocative album that relies less on the production for its impact and is...also their best yet.", "...tastefully gloomy metal....an unpretentious approach to lyric writing, stylistically speaking...", "...Danzig's tightest set yet, 4 uncorks John Christ's Black Sabbath-spinoff guitar on bluesy goth-rock..."
After the previous 3 Danzig albums, we find a slight shift in style here, with some songs more of a shift than others. While undeniably Danzig, with great vocals, lyrics, and musicianship, Danzig steps into industrial rock to some extent with experimental flashes of of middle eastern (?), some jazz influence, and perhaps less of the bluesy, metal, punk attitude of previous albums. After several listens to this album, with an open mind to try and appreciate where Danzig was going and what he was trying to do, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this album, but in a slightly different context than Danzig 1,2, or 3. Yes, Danzig 3 was the epitome of the Danzig style and substance, but this album is worth tracking down and enjoying it for what it is. Recommended.
