At the height of the Cuban missile crisis in the 1960s, Calvin Webber takes his pregnant wife Helen underground into a cavernous air raid shelter. Misinterpreting a plane crash as war, they spend the next 35 years entombed there. Their son, Adam, is brought up learning foreign languages, dancing, boxing and playing in the astro-turfed 'back yard'. When he is sent to get supplies from the world above, he meets Eve and, in this romantic comedy, discovers the good and bad sides of 1990s America.
