    Do not despair for Johnny-head-in-air

While this is ostensibly about, successively, British and American bomber crews in rural England, it is in fact a picture of middle-class life in England at the time. The main location is a genteel hotel-cum-country pub run by Miss "Toddy" Todd, brilliantly played by Rosalind John and easily the most memorable character despite the presence of John Mills, Michael Redgrave, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey, Renée Asherson, Basil Radford, David Tomlinson, a young Bill Owen and many more, including cameo roles for debutantes Trevor Howard and Jean Simmons, no less. It's a superb story which is especially good at exploring the culture differences ("that stuff they put on their toast is called peanut butter") between the British hosts and the American guests. The film is a classic of its kind. Not to be missed.

  • Most critical review

A very dated and disappointing film

This film is very dated, as it was made presumably during or just after WW2. It portrays the main British characters with very stiff upper lips, and the Americans as gung ho. Story line is weak and the film jumps suddenly from 1940 to 1942. I was very disappointed with this film

  • A fabulous war-time love story.

A fabulous war-time love story or three with an amazing cast. Bonar Colleano, in his first film, provides the fun as well as eye candy. Great performances all round.
