Kevin Costner is always a joy to watch in anything. Here, his relationship with Allen is unconvincing, as she seems so uptight and he so relaxed, also - she looks old enough to be his mother. Good theme in that a person can change character and attitude because of life's disasters .But why, if her husband had suddenly disappeared, did she not look for him ? Why, if she was convinced he had run off with his secretary, did she not simply ring the secretary/office and check that out ?

The Upside of Anger was a wonderfully written script. The perfect blend of humor and sadness, consistent in real life. Each character was developed uniquely, with many different layers. Each character was matched by strong up and coming and veteran actors. Joan Allen as usual is a gem and proves that mainstream Hollywood is missing one of the great female leads of our time. Kevin Costner sticks out and steals the show. He's quirky but real and perfectly lovable. All the girls, although they did not get enough screen time, were capable, exceptional, actors with a bright future in front of them all. Especially the youngest daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood. This is a rare comedy that must be seen.
It is a marvelous movie, one that can be watched time and time again, as I have done. Initially it portrays Kevin Costner as a lonely and to some extent, an irresponsible retired baseball star. His neighbour Joan Allen has as it appears been deserted by her husband, leaving her the responsibility of raising four almost defiant daughters. This does not prove to be easy, and reflects the turmoils one is to expect in the circumstances. What makes it so intriguing is the tranformation of both Costner and Allen in the parts they play and their reliance upon one another. A complete shock and totally unexpected ending !!!!!!! Brilliant acting by all, including the writer MIKE BINDER.
I didnt think much of this film, I like costner that was my reason for buying it, Its very slow some parts were funny, and there was a shock ending, but who wants to see a film with a angry middleaged woman in it, If you are thinking of buying this dont waist your money.
Seen it at the cinema. Underrated film. Good story, great subtle humour and well acted. Recommend
