I remember this show reasonably well, even though i was only 8 or so at the time it was on. Sunday evenings after tea, and i think after songs of praise. In those days with only 3 channels,(and some TV's only receiving 2 of them) you watched what you were offered. I also recall the claustrophobic atmosphere given by the series. Especially when the fort is hemmed in on all sides by the enemy of the French and the Indians. Magua was the leader of the Hurons who were the enemy. He was played by the now famous welsh actor Phillip Madoc. John Abineri had the role of Chingacgook the Indian chief of a defunct and deafeated tribe, with his son Uncas. the famous 'Hawkeye' role was played by Kenneth Ives. All in all a good cast and a script that apparently sticks pretty closely to the book it was based on (written by J. Fenimore Cooper) The difference between studio scenes and the outdoor is pretty marked, but for its day im sure was the norm. I was surprised to learn it was filmed in the Scots Highlands and not Canada. But then I have never been to either, so this means little, all i know is it looked authentic to me. The Campsie Fells, in Stirling was were the outdoor was filmed. I have a Scots pal who often used to tell me of its great beauty. now i finally know what he was talking about. The release comes on two dvds, with English sub-titles for hard of hearing, though with no extras to speak of. Length is 345 minutes (five and three quarter hours) Released by the BBC on Acorn media. All in all i thought it was a good buy.Read full review
