Superb series
Van Der Valk underwent several transformations in its run from 1972 to 1992 - the only constant being Barry Foster in the title role. No less than three actresses took the role of his wife Arlette; his bosses also came and went, as did his cigar puffing and heavy drinking (whilst on duty when possible!) Series 1 was the best for me, with interesting characters and unusual stories. The often maligned Michael Latimer plays Insp. Johnny Kroon, Pete Van Der Valk's sidekick in the first two series. In later episodes the stories became repetitive, with corpses being discovered on barges on at least two occasions. Series 4 & 5, with the format extended to 1 hour 45 instead of the previous 51 minutes don't work as well - I struggled to keep attention.
